ORIGIN
Charo is a Spanish-American singer, guitarist, actress, and comedian. She rose to prominence in the 1970s with her Latin vibes and trademark phrase “cuchi-cuchi”. Her television credits include The Surreal Life and Chico and the Man. Charo was born Maria Rosario Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza on January 15, 1951, in Murcia, Spain. Her father was a lawyer and her mother a homemaker. She became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1977.

CAREER
Charo learned classical and flamenco guitar at a young age. She studied under the famous virtuoso Spanish guitarist, Andres Segovia. Charo was discovered by Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat, whom she married in 1966. She followed his orchestra to Las Vegas where she performed as a singer and dancer. The couple appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show several times in the mid to late 1960s.

Charo began her solo career in the 1970s. She’s performed alongside Johnny Carson, George Burns, Joey Bishop, and several others. Her disco albums “La Salsa” and “Flamenco Salsa” were produced by Capitol Records. Charo’s popular songs include “Cuchi Cuchi”, “Stay With Me” and “Dance a Little Bit Closer”. The album Guitar Passion (1994) rose to Platinum status and earned her an award for Female Pop Album of the Year.

Charo’s film credits include Tiger by the Tail (1968), The Concorde: Airport ’79 (1979), and Moon Over Parador (1988). She produced and starred in the variety show ‘Tropical Heat’ for several years in Hawaii. She was featured on the comedy series, Chico and the Man, alongside comedian Freddie Prinze. Her television credits also include The Love Boat (1977-84), The Surreal Life (2004), and Jane the Virgin (2016). Charo was selected as a contestant for season 24 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Her professional partner is South African dancer Keo Motsepe.

Charo is 5ft 4in tall and she’s of Spanish ancestry. Her net worth is estimated at $60 million. Charo was married to her first husband ‘Xavier Cugat’ from 1966 until their divorce in 1978. She wed her second and current husband ‘Kjell Rasten’ in August 1978. They have a son named Shel. The couple currently lives in Beverly Hills, California.
