Once in a while, movies show us the harsh realities that sometimes accompany love stories – the heartbreak, the unrequited love and the separation – and Hamari Adhuri Kahani promises to be one such film. A story of a woman trying to escape her past, who falls in love with a man whose hope is renewed with the new relationship. This latest offering from Mohit Suri’s treasure trove brings together a powerhouse cast, great music and a touching tale. Still not convinced? We give you five reasons to head to the theatres to watch this week’s release, Hamari Adhuri Kahani.
Vidya Balan
One of the best actresses in the industry today, Vidya has been known to portray strong female characters on screen. She plays a married woman who constantly lives in the fear of her haunting past and who wants to leave it all behind. Seen for the first time on screen since her detective drama, Bobby Jasoos, it would be interesting to watch her hold her own as her character is caught in the midst of a destructive love triangle.
Emraan Hashmi
After his superhero outing with Mr X, Emraan is back on screen as a hotel magnate who sees a new dimension to love and life when he falls for Vidya Balan’s character. Aarav is not only a detached man with a tragic past, but also a selfless man who can go to any lengths to make the love of his life happy. After their quirky and out-of-the-box act together in Ghanchakkar, we’re surely set to see a different side to the Vidya-Emraan pairing.
Rajkummar Rao
Playing the abusive husband Hari, the talented Rajkummar Rao is the third point of the love triangle. Seen briefly in the trailer, especially in a deranged state, Rajkummar’s character evokes intrigue. His vengeful desire to destroy Aarav and Vasudha’s relationship would not only lend intensity but also a level of darkness to the film.
Mohit Suri
Known to bring musical love sagas to the screen, the most recent ones being Ek Villain and Aashiqui 2, the director explores yet another love story with Hamari Adhuri Kahani. Bringing the concepts of selfless love, destructive marriages and infidelity to the forefront, how he plays off the reticent Aarav, the cloistered Vasudha and the violent Hari against each other would be interesting to watch. Known to pay attention to the soundtrack of his films, the soulful and nuanced tracks of the film definitely reflect the mood and it remains to be seen how he weaves the songs into the story.
Element of reality
Hamari Adhuri Kahani is based on the real-life relationship between Mahesh Bhatt’s parents, Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Mohammed Ali and his stepmother. Mahesh Bhatt, known to make films inspired from actual events and stories in his past, channels this story through his nephew Mohit’s direction. Having previously thrown light on the broken relationship of his parents in Zakhm, let’s hope that the Bhatts can bring the same tenderness and sensitivity to this film as well.
