The Good
This game has incredible graphics and highly creative art design. The characters, enemies, weapons, and items are all lavishly designed.
The cutscenes are amazing spectacles (no pun intended) to behold, and the dialog is often saucy and fun.
The main element that makes gameplay fun is Witch Time. When she dodges an enemy's attack at the last second, Bayonetta can slow down time for her enemies, giving her the opportunity to retaliate or prey on them. This also helps to make the game fair, yet challenging.
The music is nice. The game has its own version of "Fly Me to the Moon" that is cued during certain battles and moments. The sound effects and voice acting are nice as well.
The game contains many references to other games that the developers have worked on in their careers.
The Bad
The story is muddled and poorly explained.
The game feels a little short. In the end, you'll want more!
Sometimes, the game throws you into situations that you won't feel fully prepared for. This is as close as the game gets to being frustrating.
The Bottom Line
Bayonetta is a great action game. It's better than Devil May Cry and Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden. The difficulty level on Normal is more fair than either of those games, too. But the game is still challenging, and mostly enjoyably so. There was never a point in the game where I felt I was in an impossible situation.
Bayonetta feels like a game that was made entirely with awesomeness and fun in mind, and it almost completely delivers, throughout its entire gameplay length. It feels like the game that everyone involved has always wanted to make.
Bayonetta is a game that deserves to be played and cherished by those who love action games, and games that are crazy and over-the-top. Buy it, and maybe one day, we'll get a worthy sequel. Send SEGA and Platinum Games a message with your money.
