Family Note

Marriage with Sophie Elizabeth VANEENBERGEN:

From the Bendigo Independent 10th November 1904:-

FIRE AT LONG GULLY. A LAMP EXPLODES. LANDLADY SERIOUSLY BURNED. A CHILD'S PROVIDENTIAL ESCAPE. The Rose of Australia Hotel, Long Gully, was the scene of a somewhat sensational burning accident last evening, the wife of the licencee and the licensee, Mr. Alfred Thomas sustaining severe, and in the case of Mrs Thomas, serious injuries. About 8 ' o'clock Mr.Thomas was putting the children, Sydney, (eleven), Claude (five), and Walter (two) to bed The children's bedroom, which is the next but one to the bar, is long and narrow . Mrs Thomas was occupied in the room a few minutes when her husband, who was in the bar, heard a strange noise. Thinking something unusual was occurring he walked into the passage. He saw the reflection of what appeared to be a fire. Before he had time to make sure what it was, Mrs Thomas rushed towards him, screaming, her light blouse — it was" a very warm night — blazing at both arms. After quenching tho flames lie rushed into the bedroom. The window curtains and wall paper were alight, the flames having apparently been caused by an explosion of the kerosene lamp, which had been placed on a table directly under the curtains. All that could be seen, of the lamp was the metal stand, although portions of the bowl were afterwards found underneath the chest of drawers which faced the table. 'The children were out of bed and the eldest had already left the room. The next (Claude) followed, and the baby had disappeared from sight, the father concluded that he had been taken care of. The nearest extinguisher was the tub of water used in tho "bar for glass-cleaning purposes. With this Mr. . Thomas considerably reduced tho flames, but not before his right hand had been severely burned. He was able to beat out the remaining flames, and thus when tho fire brigade, who had a minute before been sent for, arrived, the damage, as far as the building was concerned, was over. When one of tho firemen leaned against the door, a cry of pain was heard. Looking behind it, the little two-year-old was seen cuddled up between the door and the wall, where he had evidently crawled at the sight of flame. He was uninjured, but had tho flames spread suffocation would have been inevitable. Mrs. 'Thomas sustained very serious burns on both arms. Drs. Penfold and Catford attended to her, and to Mr. Thomas. It is evident that Mrs. Thomas made an unsuccessful attempt to smother the flames, hence her being so severely burned. It will be some weeks before she will recover from the shock, and the effect of the burns.
