Player Outlook
Kirby Yates continues to miss plenty of bats with his fastball and splitter, as last year was his fourth straight full season with a 30-plus percent strikeout rate (31.5%). Unfortunately, his control significantly regressed with 37 walks across 60.1 innings for a 14.6% walk percentage that was 5th-worst among qualified relievers. Yates, who turns 37 in March, projects to fill a setup role with the reigning World Series champions after recently signing a 1-year deal with Texas. He's the most experienced reliever on the roster and with 62 career saves, he could eventually work his way into the 9th inning as long as he's not issuing too many free passes.Fantasy Stats

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Nabs 10th save
Rotowire Jun 14, 2024
Yates picked up the save over the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing one walk over a scoreless ninth inning while striking out three. Yates had a bit of a hard time getting through the ninth after entering the contest with a two-run lead, surrendering a leadoff walk to Teoscar Hernandez on five pitches and advancing him to second base on a balk. However, the veteran reliever made short work of the next three batters, getting all three to go down swinging as he secured his 10th save in as many chances. Yates has been solid in the closer role for Texas thus far and holds a 1.11 ERA on the campaign. He's also recorded multiple strikeouts in three of his last four appearances and has yet to surrender a home run in 2024.

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Close call in ninth save
Rotowire Jun 13, 2024
Yates allowed a run on two hits and a walk over one inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Dodgers. Yates wasn't sharp in the ninth inning, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Jason Heyward doubled to center field to knock in one run, but Andy Pages ignored a stop sign at third base and the relay throw from Marcus Semien to Jonah Heim was in time to get the final out at the plate. Prior to Wednesday, Yates was on a six-inning scoreless streak dating back to May 15, though he had just one save in that span due to the Rangers' generally poor play. For the season, he's at a 1.16 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB through 23.1 innings while adding nine saves and two holds.

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Notches seventh save
Rotowire May 9, 2024
Yates gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in the ninth inning during the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the A's, recording his seventh save of the season in a 12-11 win. It didn't seem like the Rangers would need their closer when they took a 12-7 lead into the final frame, but after Owen White gave up three straight singles to load the bases without getting an out, Yates was pressed into duty. The right-hander wound up allowing all three inherited runners to score, plus one of his own, before finally escaping the jam. It was the first run Yates had given up all season, and he sports a 0.56 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB through 16 innings without blowing a save.
