Despite a disappointing projected opening weekend, The Marvels may have just revealed exactly why it is worth flocking to cinemas for: it will see the X-Men join the MCU. The Marvels will be released this weekend on November 10 and will feature Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan teaming up against Dar-Benn, a Kree revolutionary leader and, more importantly, wielder of the Universal Weapon. The weapon at Dar-Benn's disposal has to be pretty significant to stand a chance of matching up to Danvers alone, and the most recent trailer for The Marvels has just confirmed that this is the case beyond all doubt.
The final trailer for The Marvels revealed quite a lot of new footage, emphasizing heavily the high stakes that it is set to impose as Dar-Benn seems somewhat unstoppable. Not only has it confirmed the presence of Valkyrie in The Marvels, but it has confirmed that Dar-Benn has the means to tear holes in realities, exposing the MCU's universe to another. This, as was learned in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is the kind of thing that causes an incursion, which threatens to destroy the entire Universe in which the MCU is set. It also provides perfect circumstances to finally introduce the MCU's X-Men.
The Marvel's Incursion Bombshell Explained
One of the most prominent shots of the new trailer for The Marvels was the one that saw a gaping hole in space that Monica Rambeau is seemingly trying to fix. As Rambeau explains: "She tore a hole in space. There's a different reality bleeding into ours." This is bad news for all inhabitants of the main MCU Universe, which is now under threat of complete annihilation should these series of events lead to an Incursion. As was explained by Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the eroding of the barrier between two realities is exactly the parameters under which Incursions occur - and that's exactly what Dar-Benn has done.
The Doctor Strange of Mr. Fantastic's universe caused an Incursion by exploring different universes via the Darkhold, leading to his execution.
This helps explain why Thanos has made an appearance in the most recent trailers for The Marvels, stating in an as-yet unheard line that there will always be someone to continue his work. Dar-Benn is a villain hellbent on revenge against Captain Marvel, seemingly willing to resort to extreme measures to destroy everything that Danvers holds dear. Needless to say, causing an Incursion by destroying the barrier between two realities is one effective - if overzealous - way of achieving both goals. Assuming Danvers and company will stave off this annihilation, however, it also opens up the door, quite literally, to Fox's X-Men in the MCU.
Why The Marvel's Multiverse Twist Could Bring The X-Men To The MCU
The X-Men's arrival in the MCU has been anticipated ever since Marvel acquired the rights for the franchise from Fox in 2019. Since then, the groundwork has been laid slowly, such as with the introduction of mutants like Namor and Ms. Marvel into the MCU and the shocking arrival of Patrick Stewart's Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given that this particular cameo took place in another universe, there is reason to believe that the arrival of another universe in The Marvels could bring in more of Fox's X-Men.
There is a small possibility that this will be another tease without a significant payoff as Marvel toys with its audience once more. Previous examples include the "Quicksilver" bait-and-switch in Wandavision and the door that looks suspiciously like Cerebro in Loki Season 2 - which is now less likely to have anything to do with the X-Men. There is, however, the glaring fact that Marvel needs to imminently set the parameters by which all the characters from Fox's X-Men franchise will make their MCU debut appearance in Deadpool 3.
The X-Men In The Marvels Would Explain Deadpool 3's Rumored Cameos
Several cameos have been rumored to appear in Deadpool 3 that mostly comprise some of the Fox's X-Men franchise's biggest stars. With the Professor X precedent set by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the joining of two universes seems to make their arrival the logical conclusion. After all, Professor X's classic-look homage to the 90s X-Men cartoon would suggest that a Wolverine in his yellow spandex suit, as illustrated by Deadpool 3's promo poster, is also present in that universe. Whether it will be this universe precisely, however, remains to be seen.
From what is known of Deadpool 3, the Merc With A Mouth will be doing some Multiverse-hopping of his own. Presumably, however, he neither has a TemPad nor the abilities of America Chavez. The tear in reality set up in The Marvels, then, will no doubt lead to his exploration of the MCU alongside other X-Men characters, from those that appeared in Fox's franchise to those that have only been rumored.
